Africa: Darfur

The killing fields of Darfur, in western Sudan, constitute the first genocide of the twenty-first century.

Despite a recent peace agreement between one rebel faction and the government of Sudan, attacks continue unabated on civilian villages, especially in northern Darfur.

Hampered by a weak mandate and endemic corruption, an overstretched and under-funded peacekeeping force of about 7,000 African Union monitors keeps tabs on the violence, unable to stop it.

These photographs - of the rebels, the refugees, and the remains of bombed-out villages - were made in three trips to the region over a three-year period, starting in 2004.
